African Soft Fur Rats

African Soft Fur Rats are an alternative food source for reptiles, primarily ball pythons.  We have been breeding ASFs for approximately three years and have observed many pros and a few cons compared to the standard Norwegian Rat.

Pros:

Low Odor:  ASFs smell SIGNFICANTLY less than regular rats and mice.

Size:  An adult ASF will never grow too large for an adult ball python to eat.

High Reproductive Rate:  ASFs regularly have very large litters.  We have personally had litters as large as 17, with the average around 12.

Ease of Breeding:  Male ASFs help care for the babies so there is never a need to remove the male from the colony.  Additionally, female ASFs will regulate their own litters so there is no need to worry about back to back breedings.

Cons:

They Chew:  A lot.  Sometimes on your fingers.

Size:  Exceptionally large ball pythons may need to be fed two adult ASFs at one feeding.

We do not have any ASFs for sale at this time.

*Please Note:  While we do not feel that ASFs pose any greater imprinting risk than normal mice or rats, we still start all of our hatchlings on normal mice or rats because we know that ASFs are not readily available in all areas.*
